WHAT DID YOU SAY?Did you just call me 大小姐?
Excuse me!!!
I AM 天下崇拜女皇帝?!!
Haha okay jokes aside, tried out Nakhon at kovan with KJ & Rosalind.
They were late And still call me daxiaojie? Make me wait at macs for 20mins okay!! I don't mind Nakhon food cause it's really quite nice and price is good... avg $6 per dish for each? And no service charge too! Super authentic taste. I have no idea why Rosalind prefers Thai express to Nakhon though, maybe it's merely a case of diff strokes for diff folks! In general, Nakhon is a small food Thai eatery with really authentic tasting food, which is definitely evident with the long queue! The place takes on the "no-frills" concept but the cooking is certainly proficient to keep you wanting for more. Okay food time!! Tour guide squirrel will tempt your tastebuds with a few pics I have!
Appetizer : Pandan Chicken
One plus point is that the pandan leave is easy to unfold so don't have to resort to hands. The meat is tender and sweet Thai sauce that goes with it gives a really sweet and savory taste. It's 4 pieces a plate if I rmb correctly!
Soup of the day: Clear Prawn tomyum soup
It is definitely spicy when reaching the bottom of the bowl. It is strong in its spices and garnishing enhances the flavor. I am no big fan of paisley however. Nonetheless, get this, it's fabulous! Even though I had to down a few cups of water because of spiciness, I really did enjoy it!
Entrée: Pineapple fried rice
Rice is fried with pineapple bits and raisins and topped with chicken floss. This dish is surprisingly not too oily or heavy and is suitable for those who are guilty of having a sweet tooth.
Meat: Minced meat stir fried with basil leaves
This dish has an overall blend of sweet and salty. The minced meat was pleasantly mixed together with long beans. It is NOT spicy so for those who like zi-char non-spicy Thai food, this is the dish for you!
Veggie: Stir fried kangkong with belachan
In Singapore terms, it's really Sambal Kangkong! Because it 清炒 rather than 炒, the kangkong still has abit of veggie freshness in it. The kangkong is also softer and the stems are more chewable so makes it a highlight worthy point for ppl w braces!
Curry: Green chicken curry
This dish is definitely sweet again. Not spicy at all. I found it abit starchy but loved the tenderness of the chopped chicken meat. This dish was great but not exactly spectacular for me. Maybe the beef would have been a better choice!
Dessert: (NOT AT NAKHON) Longan Ice Jelly
We actually went to Kovan Food Centre to have dessert! I actually wanted the steam tapioca at Nakhon though>< it's my fav Thai dessert, but I don't want coconut milk. I just like it plain or with the sugar syrup. Anw, so I brought them to Kovan Food Centre popular dessert stall. Longan is my fav can fruit and it's been a long time since I ate local kind of dessert so it was a clear choice for me! Still $2!!! Serving size may be small for some people but it's just nice for me. And syrup wasn't too sweet. I love squeezing lime over the ice jelly, just like that sour taste! Rosalind had redbean nata de coco. KJ has 豆浆油条! Last time 豆浆油条 had a $1.20 set but I think prices have hiked.
---------
Then, it struck me that we actually have some really good food here at Kovan Food Centre. There's A1 chicken rice, TeoChew Fishball Noodle, Lee Wee Brothers Nasi Lemak, 69 豆花豆花水, The Sugarcane and etc. oh there's also this wanton mee stall, carrot cake stall & morning kueh stall that opens only in the mornings. And the queues are forever forever long.
Along upper serangoon road, there's also a few TeoChew porridge eateries such as Soon Soon, Heng Long and Alishan. There's also scissors curry rice, and Yong's TeoChew kueh!! ( my fav TeoChew kueh stall in the world) oh and there's this coffee shop that is quite acceptable in terms of vicinity cleanliness that I patronize from time to time at the end of Lim Ah Pin road. There's this new dimsum stall that opened last year and the dimsum is pretty good. I will agree that it is pricey for the norm price but the 流沙包 is really not bad!! Obviously don't go comparing with Michelin star restaurant, but if you're a 流沙包粉丝, try it!!
With the advent of condominiums and bustling life style, the row of eateries right next to kovan mrt has boomed too. Noticeably, there's charcoal Thai, Lola's Cafe & Ice edge. Charcoal Thai is Thai steamboat place; Lola's is opened by June Tan and the place is fully packed every night; Ice edge is a lucky gelato ice cream business that took off and is v popular in the area. (Price not that great, but flavours are)
Yup so tour guide squirrel realised that there's lots of TeoChew food?? Maybe kovan was populated with TeoChew ppl last time o.O
That's all folks!
